Designing Flying Seeds (Infants - 4 years old)

We collected helicopter seeds from a tree on the patio and we looked at how they flew.  In the class, we talked about why flying away from the tree would be an advantage.  Then the students cut their own wing shapes from paper, stuck on a plasticine seed and tested them with a fan.  Some of the students realised that their seeds didn't fly and went back and redesigned seeds that flew better. The students analysed what they needed to do, created their seeds and then evaluated how well they worked.

  1. I love it! All the different shapes, the variety, the adaptations for survival, they are all pretty amazing. When learning about seeds with kids, one of my favorite one is the dandelion Seed.
