Hands on Science Books

I have written some science activity books and I am posting links to the PDFs on this page (see below).  They are written by a British scientist with a doctorate in chemistry and they are intended for schools working with the Spanish Curriculum in English.  They contain activities for whole class experiments with the students working in groups of 4-5 children.  They are free to download, use and photocopy.  I am doing this because I want to encourage teachers to do more practical activities in classes and I don't think that the activities in normal text books really help teachers to actually do experiments.  If you use my work, please credit it (Jenny Cumming) so that I know that it is worth continuing to write material.

Hands on Science - Primary 4

This book contains 20 detailed experiments and a project that follow the Spanish curriculum for cuarto.  There are teaching notes, photo summaries and a printable/photocopiable worksheet for each experiment.  Here is an example of how an experiment is presented:

Hands on Science - Primary 5

This book contains 20 detailed experiments and a project that follow the Spanish curriculum for quinto.  There are teaching notes, photo summaries and a printable/photocopiable worksheet for each experiment.  Here is an example of how an experiment is presented:

Methodology

Activities in normal text books really only enable students to use the bottom two levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.  The activities usually require a lot of organisation and, as they are presented, only last about 5 minutes.  I wanted to write activities that enable an experiment to be done by the students in a group so they can discuss and explain.  I also wanted the activity to last 15-20 minutes so it is worth organising and I have done this by getting the students to do measuring, completing tables and drawing graphs.  These are all skills that are at higher levels on Bloom's Taxonomy.
